2022 NGLA Lectorials on C.H.A.N.G.E.

Our * new * Lectorials on C.H.A.N.G.E. program, supported by the Order of Omega, is a series of lectorials focused on Cancel Culture, Hazardous Behavior, Accessibility, Navigating Title IX, Generating Buy-in, Emotional Intelligence. A lectorial is a large-scale educational program underpinned by active student-centered learning, utilizing inquiry-based and adult learning as methodologies of teaching and learning, and involving collaborative and interactive activities in place of traditional didactic lectures and tutorials.

The program format is approximately 40 minutes of content, 40 minutes of facilitated breakouts, and 10 minutes for closing. The breakouts will include reflection exercises, peer-to-peer interaction, etc., and will be facilitated by professionals.

The Lectorials on C.H.A.N.G.E. is on Friday, February 25 at 1:15pm ET as part of the In-Person Experience of the 2022 NGLA Annual Conference in Baltimore, MD.

Cancel Culture? You’re probably familiar with it. You may have canceled others, or maybe been canceled yourself. But what is it, really? Stemming from aspects of communal accountability and providing a voice to those without traditional methods of speaking up, Cancel Culture is intended to address and prevent harm. Is that how it’s applied? This session teaches how to effectively address the complexities of interpersonal and organizational conflict, promote transformative accountability, normalize healthy behaviors, and initiate restorative healing.

Presenter Biography:
Tara Fuller believes community is built at the intersection of inclusion, equity, and belonging. She has been an advocate for inclusion since well before the beginning of her professional career. Tara has worked in higher education and student affairs on a number of campuses for more than 12 years. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park where she created her own course of study that deeply explored diversity, leadership, and multicultural studies.

Tara is compelled by every human’s lifelong journey to belong. She identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she was adopted as an infant and has worked through and with mental illness. She is grounded by her interest in the unique journeys people experience in the world. She sees truth-telling, curiosity, and genuine connections as the keys to making significant community impacts.

Hazardous Behavior | The Hazing Agenda: Don't Hate, Collaborate

By reading any newspaper across the country, you'll see that hazing continues to affect Greek organizations, sports teams, and even the school band. Simply put, it is threatening our very existence. According to the National Study of Student Hazing, 55% of college students have been hazed, and 47% were hazed BEFORE they came to college. The unfortunate part is that 9 out of 10 students didn't consider themselves hazed. You often read about the hazing incidents that cause physical injury (or even death). What about the mental aspects of hazing? What are the ramifications to our students?
It's essential for you to understand why hazing happens in our organizations. We’ll review the early history of hazing in society and determine what contributes to the hazing mentality- such as Bandura's Theory on moral disengagement and Cimino's sociological factors that contribute to hazing. We’ll discuss the hazing laws in your state and discuss notorious hazing incidents that have occurred from 2012 – 2021.
We’ll teach you how to recognize hazing in your organization, learn bystander intervention techniques, make positive changes to your new member education program, and report hazing when you see it on or off campus. You will learn ways to eliminate hazing in your chapter by offering a large number of replacement activities in your new member education program that promote team building, chapter unity, and skill building for your members.

Michael Ayalon is a professional speaker, author, host of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, and CEO of Greek University. He has headlined keynote presentations on over 200 college campuses in 35 states to help solve problems such as Sexual Assault, Hazing, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, and recruitment for college student organizations. As a speaker, he is able to take lessons learned from helping to build companies from startup to over $25 Million in annual sales, as well as best practices as the Former Executive Director of Sigma Pi Fraternity with 120 chapters and over 100,000 members, to create dynamic, positive, and results-driven keynotes and workshops that transform people’s lives.

Michael is the author of the book “From Letters to Leaders: Creating Impact on Your College Campus and Beyond” and the recently released "From Letters to Leaders: Redefining New Member Education and Leveraging Belonging to Eliminate Hazing". He is a graduate of the School of Management at the University at Buffalo, and has a Master’s Degree from Cumberland University in Public Service Management.

Accessibility | Code Switching: Bringing Your True Self to Every Conversation

“Why you talking white?”
Chris Molina has heard this question, or some variation, many times in his life. Of Puerto Rican and Trinidadian decent, Chris grew up in predominantly African American and Latinx communities, comfortably interacting in each. What he found as an adult, in the Marines and in college, was that he knew how to effortlessly “speak” in majority-White organizations. He was fluent in each, without even realizing it.
He could code switch seamlessly.
This signature program is designed to equip students of color and white classmates, staff, and faculty with the tools to understand Code Switching, its inherent benefits and harms. More than anything, Chris wants attendees to know they can talk openly, and genuinely, in all social situations without putting the comfort of others before their own.
He wants you to live authentically.

Chris Molina is the recipient of the 2020 NAMCA College Speaker of the Year Award (National Association for Masterminds & Co-curricular Advancement), an Amazon Best-Selling Author of his book I’m in a Leadership Role, Now What? The Student Edition, a Podcaster on the Professional by Choice Podcast and the How’d You Meet Podcast, a Personal Development Coach, a United States Marine Corps Veteran (serving 7 years on Active Duty), a Purdue University Alum, and a Leadership Literacy Expert.
More than anything, Chris is a Father (#GirlDad), a Husband, a Son, a Brother, and an East Chicago, Indiana native.

Presenter Biography:
Tim Mousseau is a survivor of sexual violence turned speaker and advocate. At the age of 22, Tim faced an incident of sexual assault. Healing from his experiences, Tim recognized how it left him feeling powerless. He vowed that no one should ever feel the same. For nine years, Tim has worked in the fields of sexual violence prevention and masculinity to move the needs on these critical topics at over 450 keynotes across the country. Throughout his work, Tim has been featured in Men’s Health, a SpokesMo for the Movember Foundation, and a past board member of the nonprofit, 1 in 6. Tim is a writer, currently working on children’s books, and an artist, having a hand in the design of all 30 plus of his tattoos based on personal life experiences.

Generating Buy-in | Buy in is Fake - Creating a Culture of Belonging is Real; How to Navigate Calling in Your Membership

As leaders in the Fraternity and Sorority Life movement, you matter, and it's time to shift our perspectives and create buy-in through belonging.

Presenter Biography:
Jamie is on a mission to end sexual violence, educate others on active bystander intervention, and uplift the fraternity and sorority life experience. She cares deeply for the development and growth of not just college students but young professionals in the field of higher education.
She is a wife, sister, sorority woman, survivor of sexual violence, and student affairs professional in higher education. She enjoys coffee, yoga, REALLY long walks, and watching old episodes of Gossip Girl and Greek. Did we mention she is a sorority woman?!
Fraternity and sorority is woven through her blood, sweat and tears. Jamie has been working with college students for over 10 years in a variety of roles including working for an inter/national sorority, on college campuses, and through facilitating and speaking.
Jamie graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, and a minor in Leadership from the University of Rhode Island. After graduating she spent some time working in sales and for a social media marketing company. Shortly after, she worked for her inter/national organization in a variety of roles as a consultant, membership manager, and house director. After that Jamie went to Northeastern University for her Master’s in College Student Development and Counseling and for the past four years she has been working at the University of New Hampshire overseeing the Fraternity and Sorority Life community there.
