Shaking Hands and Kissing Babies: Network like a BOSS

Networking…AAH! The mere mention of the word creates polarizing emotions for many. One of the biggest selling points for joining a fraternity/sorority is the networking opportunities you’ll have when you graduate. While this is very true, we never actually talk about how to engage in those conversations. Like it or not, face-to-face networking isn’t going away because today’s world is more about who you know than what you know. So, introverts & extroverts, let’s chat about it, shall we? Come spend some time this evening meeting other leaders, laughing, and starting out your NGLA conference like a BOSS!

(10:00pm - 10:30pm)

Sponsored by Metropolis Management

OVEOUS embodies brilliant lyricism with a powerful performance. Perhaps his greatest strength is that he was able to turn his brother’s suicide into a global mission for mental healing and the positive uplifting of all people he comes across with thru his music and words. He’s earned standing ovations on HBO Def Jam, The Arsenio Hall Show, and has been a winner multiple times on “Showtime at the Apollo”. His now classic hit song “Mirror Dance” with Osunlade still rocks the core of your soul on the dance floor. As a poet he’s earned countless national titles and is one of few artists to be chosen by the US State Dept of Music to represent America this year on a world tour.

OVEOUS’ KeyNote presentation combines storytelling, music, history on poetry bringing the whole community together.

The lessons BD Wong has learned in order to survive and excel in a vocation fraught with rejection, stereotyping and racism have given him a keen perspective on the subject of diversity and forced him to empower himself. In this presentation, infused with humor, storytelling and the passion of a world class artist, BD addresses the issues of racial self-image, race-based rejection, Asian-American parental pressure and the “model minority myth,” and he describes his journey as a gay man in the entertainment industry. Retracing his path from adolescent racial self-hatred to eventual self-acceptance, from struggling with inequity to breaking down barriers in his personal and professional lives and embracing his multiple identities, including fatherhood, BD reveals the man behind the roles.
